Sketchercise: Steve Zissou

Friday, October 8th, 2010

This particular Sketch Charlotte “assignment” was for the films of Wes Anderson chosen by Henry Eudy. I was thinking about doing something from the Royal Tenenbaums but decided to go with Steve Zissou instead. At the time I had no idea that the Chris Brunner had done an incredible take on the character (colors by one Rico Renzi). I’m glad I saw this AFTER I did mine, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have even attempted it!
Long story short, I penciled this piece and was set to ink it at last week’s Sketch Charlotte meeting but wused out at the last second only to have the inimitable Henry Eudy step in and graciously ink it. I saw pics from his digital camera along the way, but I finally saw it in person last night and I am blown away…possibly the happiest I’ve been in a long time with anything my name has been attached to! I hope you guys enjoy it half as much as I do…thanks again Henry!

Here’s a second entry into The Films of Wes Anderson Sketchercise, a scratchy, line ridden portrait of Max Fischer from “Rushmore.”

Sketchercise: The Baumer

So I tried my hand at my favorite Tenenbaum sibling, Richie, and I attempted to portray him in the style of Dan Clowes. (Well, one of the many Clowes styles.) In my head, this was a much more successful pairing than what I discovered I was actually capable of dishing out with my real life drawing hand. Oh well, you draw and you learn, right?

Anyhow, I really like The Baumer and I love that people are always asking him “What happened out there?” Next time you see me, you can ask me the same question concerning this drawing.

Sketchercise: Films of Wes Anderson

(Bad Route by Jason Kottke, featured in the film The Royal Tenenbaums.)

Do you sit at home, alone, night after night just toiling away on portraits of Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman that the world may never see? Well, then today is your lucky Sketchercise! The theme for this round is The Films of Wes Anderson. Participants should put on their very best crested blazers, wetsuits or red Adidas jogging suits and set about drawing their favorite characters or scenes from any existing Wes Anderson movie. Although, actually if you drew an image from a non-existent Wes Anderson movie, that might be damned impressive. Below is a helpful list of from which to draw inspiration from:

Bottle Rocket

Rushmore

The Royal Tenenbaums

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

The Darjeeling Limited (including Hotel Chevalier)

The Fantastic Mr. Fox

That’s it! Good luck out there my Lawn Wranglers!
