Sketches on the Beach

beach_women.gif

A couple of drawings I did last week while on vacation at the beach. The beach is a great spot to catch people sitting still just long enough to get a decent sketch of them. The trick during last week's heat wave was to finish the sketch before needing to run back to the ocean to cool off.

The woman on the right was leaning against a bike. I got to the pedal when I realized that I didn't feel like drawing a bike.

Condi Everybody Wants

condi.gif

I drew this in front of the TV a couple of weeks ago during one of Condi's too-little-too-late press conferences on the Israel-Lebanon war.

Finally posting!

I usually carry around a mini-sketchbook (~ 3 x 5") so that I can draw when the opportunity presents: mass transit, waiting at restaurants, live music, etc. Here are a few selections.

Sketching thick 'n thin

cpLibrary.gif
I nabbed this quickie at school this morning. It's of a video stand. The wiring was maddening. But I figured that was good enough reason to sketch it out in the first place. The few DVD's that are there sat awkwardly in the video-rack. A fat girl with a hoodie sat on the decrepid 1973 furniture. Her butt almost went to the floor (but not as much as I show it here). I'm experimenting with a thick and thin approach of sketching to get values in line down quickly. I gotta do much more!

What I Did Last Weekend

These are really rough, but in answer to Rich's challenge, I am posting a few quick sketches from the past 72 hours:

Stretchin' for sketchin'

stretch083106.gif

I nabbed this after our meeting tonight. We were chattin' about all things sketchin'. So, here's another. I guess this is where I'm headed regarding my "cartoon sketch" approach. It's definitely a way to get things down quick 'n dirty. But it's also fun! Should I go for some graytones or color splashes? Maybe so.

My kitty cat has no idea, while she stretches during halftime as the Panthers play on the tube, that I'm considering adding a third cat to our household. One of the feral kittens our condo unit has become caretakers of has really melted my heart. Anyway, cats 'n kittens are definitely great sketch subjects!

Mall sketches

Herc%20sketch2.jpg

After a long drawn out battle with the mall security I finally got my sketchbook back. ;-) So here they are. Can you tell that I'm rusty?
Peace,

Sketch Charlotte logo

A few weeks back we all tried coming up with ideas for a Sketch Charlotte logo. Something we could use on the site as well as merchandise. We decided we would use a rotating design. Here are a few of mine. We have a lot of things planned for our group. So, stay tuned.
Peace,
Herc

Character Sketches

My characters tend to be more on the realistic/normal people side of the scale and the story I'm currently developing is very much about normal looking (but emotionally disturbed) people. Here are some sketches I did a while back as I was trying to figure out what some of these people might look like.

Just a quick sketch inspired by the great day of Halloween. The scan isn't too good unfortunately.

Ah, the family portrait

So, I decided to surprise my wife with a family portrait- I really suck at capturing likeness, but this is still just a WIP. I'll keep posting my progress on this one, but don't expect the finished one before her birthday next month.

oh yeah, I realize I broke my kid's arm in this drawing... that'll get fixed.

C&C? anyone?

Dark Sheep

The last surviving sheep at the family farm in Smithtown, Long Island. Shellie has been suggested as a name, but since she is the last one, we mostly just call her "the sheep," or "the ewe."

CR Rollyson

Believe it or not, I'm working on a genuine bona fide comic, with panels, recurring characters, speech balloons, even a plot... in the meantime, though, here's yet another local music sketch, from last night's late show at The Evening Muse. http://myspace.com/crrollyson

Slow Workday Sketch

Thanks for setting me up, Rich.

Took some sketch requests yesterday since things were slow at work...this is my favorite of the results.

Would fix the hammer, but...meh.

And if anyone's wondering what I was working on at sketch group, here's the wip.
