Dusty Star # 1

Dusty%20Star.jpg Written by Andrew Robinson & Joe Pruett
Illustrated & colored by Andrew Robinson
Lettered by Marshall Dillon
Image Comics/Desperado

First off a disclaimer; I loved Andrew Robinson's Starman covers. I admit a bias when it comes to folks who worked on DC's Starman title.
Alright Dusty Star is hard to categorize and that's what I like about the title. Read the first few pages and you think it's a stylized western. Then you see a motorcycle. What the? I guess if you had to categorize Dusty Star it's a western, sci-fi, noir, and military comic.
Andrew Robinson's design sense is well defined. He's not afraid to experiment and the reader is richly rewarded for the risk. The artist's color pallet is much wider than most four color books. Dusty Star starts with a muted lavender color that is quite odd but it works. What I really enjoyed was the black and white rain page. The page is so important because the next page resumes color for a while.
The pencils are really wild. Once you think you have a handle on the style then Andrew will switch up the panels and angles. Even the characters will change slightly depending on action and story mode.
The writing is classic western mixed with noir sci-fi. I'm intrigued by the writing and can't wait to see the story evolve and become a bit meatier.
Overall I would highly recommend Dusty Star if you are looking for an interesting story telling experience.

The $10 Trade Review

Amazon recently had a 4 for 3 deal on anything priced under $10 (might still be going on) so I took the opportunity to catch up on 3 trades I had been meaning to buy - Loveless, The Exterminators and Fear Agent. Click below to read my thoughts on the purchases (if you're wondering where the 4th book is, I decided against using the 4th slot for Brian Wood's DMZ and instead used it on a Hard Case Crime novel which I have not read yet.)

A look at Teen Titans Go #37

Ah, Wednesday. New comic book day. Fresh and Tasty.

That's how I'd describe Teen Titans Go #37. Artist Sean "Cheeks" Galloway makes a splash first impression as this issue marks his first full length comic book. And what better splash to take than the Teen Titans?

The story takes place the day after Christmas. Writer J. Torres combines mystery, magic and super villians with a Titan spin on "Twas the Night Before Christmas". As The TT's are all snug as a bug, Silky (the worm) wakes Starfire for a late night potty run and a whole lot of crazy adventure.

Artwise, A whole issue of Cheeks is almost overwhelming (in a good way).
Every panel breathes life, energy, attitude and charm.

Robin, Raven, Starfire, Cyborg and Beast Boy have never looked better, and I feel pretty confident in saying that no one has ever captured their attitude as successfully as Cheeks has. The opening page says it all.

Wednesday is New Comics Day

I know a lot of my posts these days are directed at my other blog but I only do it when it's relevant. One of my regular features over there is a weekly round up of the 5 most interesting comics coming out each week. So take a look see. And feel free to give me suggestions for future weeks if there's something good coming out that I should know about:

Wolverine vs. Sabretooth. Silver Age Team-ups. NRA conspiracies. Yakuza. And retarded unicorns.

Wednesday is New Comics Day

Bear loves robot.
The perfect weapon: A cat.
The secret history of Abe Sapien.
Hiroshima, ten years later.
And Buffy is back.

Every Wednesday we run down the 5 most interesting comics and graphic novels that come out this week. These are the 5 books I'd be buying myself but I'm still pretty rattled from losing both Kara Thrace and Captain America in one week so I think it's probably best to stay away from escapist fantasy this week until I'm fully recovered.
