Queen Projectra/Princess Projectra, whatever…

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

I did this drawing Thursday night after way too many attempts in the last month to get Projectra right. Her 1970s costume, which lasted well into the 1980s, is in my opinion one of the sexiest of the 70s costumes, but only when drawn well. Keith Giffen never did it justice, but he was able to put her in outfits that showed off her regal status a lot more.

I’m not entirely pleased by this, but considering that once I started working on it in Photoshop, I realized I had a better idea for her picture, and so I’m not worried about the legs being too short or having to Photoshop the head to fix the proportions. This is gonna be a two part drawing, one of Projectra and one of her illusion, assembled in Photoshop to be easier to to do the special effect I want in the finished piece.

I’m doing the 70s Legion but focusing on the women, because 1) I’m a guy, 2) Most of them have their 70s looks as their most iconic, and 3) in the 70s Dave Cockrum and Mike Grell did their best design work on the Legion women.

After Projectra will come Saturn Girl most likely. The “pink bikini is her most talked about outfit and in my opinion, next to her Legionnaires costume, the best one. That Legionnaires unitard is awesome design, and the best ise of the 90s Legion “core” uniform design.

Back to Projectra, she was known by Princess Projectra during the 70s, because that’s what her rank was on her home planet of Orando, but changed it to Queen Projectra in the early 80s after her father died and she defeated her brother for the throne. Because I got into Legion stories in the 1980s, I know her as Queen Projectra, and so the subsequent reboots just don’t do anything for me, especially that damn snake, but I will make use of that design for her illusion in my final piece.

Direct ink goodness

Direct-ink sketches from tonight’s Sketch Charlotte meetup. At left, customer with bigass awesome beard. Right, my buddy Henry, making funny faces as he drew, knowing that I was drawing him. Tonight I rediscovered the joys of direct-ink sketching. Forced my mind to tune in as it turned off and let my eyes and pen do the rest. As always, wonderful to see everyone, laugh, and try to figure out what the hell kind of movies or TV shows they were talking about.

Nathan Takes a Tea

Earl Grey, naturally. Inspired by George Pratt and Michael Nobbs, I ditched my foul mood and went back to my “dot-dash-ugly” style. Definitely picked me up. I do enjoy drawing stuff from my head as if I’m staring at it in real life. Interestingly, the last time I did location drawing, last Thursday, I was impelled to cartoon. Today, I drew from imagination and did it in a “sketch” style. Anyway, it was fun, and seemed to chase my Tuesday demons away a bit.

I recently started a Tumblr blog for posting wordless, art only excerpts (like the one above) from my comic, Nathan Sorry, as a way of promoting it to a new audience. For those of you unfamiliar, Tumblr is a microblog service. Kind of a cross between WordPress and Twitter. You are encouraged to make short and sweet entries (a photo, a quote, a video, etc.) and, like Twitter, you can follow other users and vice versa. It’s pretty fantastic for artists. If you tag your blog “art” or “artists” then people looking for that sort of thing will probably find you.

I’m also really enjoying it as a source of inspiration. There are a ton of people on there posting cool photos, art, and design-related stuff. Also, one of the more popular Tumblr blogs is EatSleepDraw.com, which is a blog that allows you to submit drawings to be posted (if they accept it) onto the site. I’ve had two posted on there in the past couple of weeks and it’s gotten me some new followers and some new fans of Nathan Sorry.

Tumblr is free and easy to set up. So check out my blog and then explore for yourself.

By the way, a couple of new Nathan Sorry pages have gone up since last I posted about it here. Since I don’t want to deluge this site with entries for each page you should go to NathanSorry.com and subscribe to the RSS feed or sign up for email alerts when new pages go up.

Sketch Charlotte is now on Twitter

Everyone on Twitter should start following @sketchcharlotte. Get tweets whenever new blog postings go up, alerts on upcoming meetings and start conversations about art in Charlotte.

Plus, we do also have a Facebook group so why not join that too if you’re not already a member. Maybe we’ll start using it for stuff. You never know.

Whelp! Art Dump

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

It’s been way too long since I posted anything up here-  got permission to post a few images from some past clients and here they are

First up is an old character design for a local restaurant consulting group.  They needed a superhero-esque rendition of their head chef, this is what I cranked out

This was for a card game geared towards an adult’s sense of humour

And lastly-  my new project working with BWP-  Tom Corbett: Space Cadet-  this book is a BLAST to draw, the writer is setting up some top notch fun.  Oh, ignore the logo-  it’s been retooled, just never added it to this version!

Hey Kids, do you like comics?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

As some of you know, for the past couple of years I’ve been writing a weekly preview of the top 5 most interesting comic releases over at a site called YesButNoButYes.com. As of last week I’ve started “syndicating” that column on the blog for our local comics shop, Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find. Head on over there and leave a comment if you’d like. It’s a really great blog with some good comics related content so check it out.

Wednesday is New Comics Day at The Heroesonline Blog.

Heroes Discussion Group

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

I recently did an interview with Dustin Harbin and Andy Mansell about the monthly Heroes Discussion Group they hold over at Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find. I went to my first group meeting last month and it was fantastic! A lively and really interesting dissection of Batman: Year One. I totally recommend everyone check one of these out.

In the meantime, here’s my discussion with Dustin and Andy about the ins and outs of running a comic book discussion group.
