Sketches from Last Night’s Meetup

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Like Brandon said, last night’s turnout was really crazy. Lots of talented artists (as well as some non-artists hanging out) drawing cool stuff and talking about art.

This is what I sketched while I was there. Mostly just getting the feel for my new Pentel brush pen.

Hickory Tavern Sketches

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

We tried out a new location this week and I think it worked out pretty well. We had a good group of artists come out to drink beer, eat burgers and draw in their sketchbooks. While most of the Sketch Charlotte guys fill their pages with imaginative cartoons or character drawings I tend to draw the people I see so here’s who I saw this evening.

At the Philosopher’s Stone

Friday, June 12th, 2009

So there was a grand total of four of us at the Philosopher’s Stone this week. I think everyone agreed that they liked the atmosphere there more so than at Showmars. The darker lighting at the P-stone took some getting used to, but once everyone’s eyes adjusted (and it stopped raining), the guys didn’t seem to have a problem knocking out a few sketches.

Heroes Con will be upon us soon.  For those of you that I’ve already met, I hope to see you guys there.  I’ll be volunteering this year, meaning I’ve given Shelton the license to turn me into a workhorse.  Brandon’s already got sketchbooks printed up.  This year, they’re featuring him, Mark Godby, and Terence Hoskins.  If you want to reserve one (and maybe even request a sketch on the back cover), give him a shout (Facebook, Twitter).

Some photos from the meeting below. Sorry for not having captured a group shot. I was too lazy to get out of my chair and move far enough back to get one.

Say Cheese

Howdy, folks!

The name’s Vy (“vee”). I’m the newest addition to the Sketch Charlotte blog.  I won’t be posting many sketches because I can’t actually draw, but I will be posting photos from Sketch Charlotte meetings.  Brandon figured it would be nice if people actually knew what some of the regular attendees of Sketch Charlotte looked like.

I think Terence suggested having a meeting at the P-stone sometime in the near future so they can drink while they sketch. I promise I’ll have my camera with me when that happens.

Here’s what I did after finishing up some chicken fingers and fries. What did everybody else do?

Sketch Charlotte Meetup Feb 12

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

We had a good meetup this past Thursday (my first in a while). Good conversation, some (probably day old) coffee and a little bit of sketching. These were some non-Sketch Charlotte patrons sitting behind us at Showmars. Joining Tom, Herc and myself was first time attendee Michael Ashe who brought along some awesome sketches to show and new friend to Sketch Charlotte, comic book pro, Jason Latour who brought back the Con Flu from NYCC and probably infected us all.
Next meeting is Friday February 27th at The Philosopher’s Stone.

Meetin’ ‘n Sketchin’!

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Wow, what a great meet-up Brandon, Terrence and I had. We ate, then wasted no time in whipping out those sketchbooks and starting to work. I made two new friends, the uber-talented Jason and Chris, whom B&T invited to our SC meetings. I hope they come back and get on their sketching groove. (The rest of you’uns really missed out.) I did notice that they never seemed to stop drinking coffee. Must have something to do with all of those deadlines. By the end of the night Jason’s voice seemed somewhat shaky and cranked up. Of course I got the same way after two glasses of Diet Pepsi (that’s right, not Coke, as Herc’s always ordered at Showmar’s … the waitress said they usually just get the Diet Pepsi and don’t say anything … Diet … Pepsi? Kind of like decaffinated Mountain Dew, if you ask me — ugh! I’m going for the coffee next time.)

I managed to get three sketches done, which was an amazing release given the totally horrid workweeks I’ve been having lately. My favorite moment of the night? When Brandon kept saying, “I don’t know what I’m going to sketch. I really don’t. What am I doing? I don’t know what I’m going to sketch. I don’t know what I’m –” when Terrence interjected, with a b!tchslap sound in his voice, “Just DRAW, man!!!” :) They both worked up some groovy stuff, too.

Brandon, thanks for the idea and impetus in getting our additional meetups going (and with such great energy!). Looks like our additional night will be Friday, alternating two weeks after our regular Thursday monthly meeting (is it the first or second Thursday of each month, Rich??!).

I pencilled my first sketch of Terrence, then went back in with my customized Niji brushpen to ink. For the second two, I went for a direct-ink charge and thrill using the AMAZING Avery eGel rollerball .7 mm pen and Niji. It felt all too easy. Maybe I’ll use this approach with some acrylic white paint and bap out some sketch comics this year, too. We’ll see. At least I’ll keep up this style of sketching, ’cause it just dodesn’t get any better than this, feeling-wise, for me.
