What a great Sketch Charlotte meeting last night! I’ve been coming for over 2 years and I’ve never seen that many people…we had 15 show up! I have to admit I didn’t even know a good 5-6 people at the table. The drawing and conversation was so good I didn’t get a chance to get up and meet everyone. And the table set up didn’t really allow for it anyway.
Onto Sketchercise! #3 is my week and I’ve decided to choose anything and everything from any of the Hellboy and BPRD books! Have at it gang!
Here’s a little something to kick off the topic, a piece I did from last year’s sketchbook…Abe Sapien!

And yes, Tee, I’ll be doing a new sketch for this topic!

I had free reign on this one, all that was specified was “Superman related character.” So I went with my favorite DCU villain Darkseid! Prismacolor pens & markers with white acrylic paint spatter on 9 x 12 bristol.

This is an edited version of the original commission for my buddy Ted. He wanted a Luke Cage piece that showed both versions. He also mentioned liking a playing card drawing I’d done before (Spirit/GL Hal). So I combined the two. The original piece Ted has hanging in his downtown pad has the current Luke Cage on top with the 70′s version on bottom. I thought the 70′s version was a better drawing, so I flipped it, cleaned up the “CAGE” belt buckle and added a playing card-espue background. I’m really happy with how this one turned out!
I’m usually have more of a realistic style, but bending the rules really gave this a playing card feel. The proportions are off, but I think they really serve the overall design. May take a crack at some more playing cards at some point down the line…
The original was done with Copic markers on my usual 9 x 12 bristol board.

Hey there, remember me? Hope everybody had a good holiday. I wanted to share some of what I’ve been working on lately. If you’d like to see more I’ve got an album of comics at http://www.myspace.com/tessgadwa. That’s sort of a placeholder until I can get a real comics blog together… hopefully January.
I still follow the blog and I really miss you guys. I’ve looked for a similar group here in MA and have not yet found one. Let me know if you ever make it up to cons in the NYC area or elsewhere in the Northeast!

This was an illustration I did for a manuscript under development by John Amen and Daniel Harris, as is the next...

I still don't like drawing in Illustrator, but I suppose it was a good learning experience.

I did this bookmark (front and back) as a wedding favor for friends.

These two are actually old (Fall 07) but I wanted to get permission from the bride and groom before posting.

A while back I posted the sketch below so I thought people might be interested in seeing where it went from here.

I inked over this sketch and scanned it in, doing a heavy amount of Photoshop retouching not just to the line integrity but to the actual structure of the face which I wasn’t happy with once I saw it on screen.

I then added some tones and dropped it into a page layout I’ve been working on. I always knew I was only going to use half the face but I inked the whole thing since I wasn’t sure if I’d change my mind. Below is the final image and the final design for a new splash page that is now live on NathanSorry.com
