I have a gallery show coming up in April up in my old stomping grounds of Lenoir, NC and I wanted some strips that were better suited to the gallery environment. Eventually, I am gonna re-draw an earlier Jet-Pack Jenny story that I’m not happy with, and decided that this shot, needed to be expanded to full strip length. It’s Jet-Pack Jenny tossing Bad Bette over her in a judo-type flip.

Saturday, August 13th, 2011Loose Ends #1
Tuesday, July 12th, 2011I’m not the one to pimp books, but this is one I believe in. LOOSE ENDS #1 (of 4) comes out tomorrow from 12 Gauge Comics (Diamond order code is MAY11122). LOOSE ENDS is a creator-owned Southern Crime Romance comic from writer Jason Latour and artists Chris Brunner & Rico Renzi. They just all happen to be from Charlotte, so there’s another reason why I’m pushing. But if you’ve seen any of the art from this or were lucky enough to read the ashcan or FCBD offering then you know exactly why I’m posting this. The early reviews from critics and pros alike have been fantastic (see CBR, twitter & devART) And having seen it in various stages of completion, I have to say I agree with them 100%.
Do me a favor. Now I’m not asking you to blindly drop $4 for something you’ve never seen. All I’m asking is that the next time you’re at your LCS, pick it up and just flip through it. In today’s landscape of convoluted crossovers it’ll be nice having something fresh and original. You can thank me later.
And if by chance you live in the greater Charlotte area, there’s a release party at Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find with an 11 x 17 incentive print (see below) with the purchase of LOOSE ENDS #1! The guys will be there from noon-2:00 pm and again at 5-8:00 pm on Wednesday the 13th.
Sketch Charlotte at Fanaticon 2
Thursday, May 19th, 2011Fanaticon 2 happens this Saturday, May 21st in Asheville and, despite taking place about 130 miles from our base of operations, Sketch Charlotte will be there, representin’. Henry (um…that’s me, writing this right now, weirdly enough) and Herc will be holding down Table 72 while Tom will be just down Artist’s Alley a bit at Table 74. We’ll be selling comics, making sketches and looking damn suave, so if you’re in the area check us out.
Also at the show will be some of our favorite people from Wide Awake Press (Tables 64-65) and our friends Brent and Tiziana from Deaver Park Press (Table 48). I believe Seth might be there, working the Heroes booth, and Heather will no doubt be around gathering pics and sketches for the Exile on Plain Street blog. It’s gonna be a great show, Asheville is a fun town and the convention is free, so there.

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011Sketchercise: Hellboy
Sunday, March 27th, 2011I finally got around to participating in the “Sketchercise: Hellboy” challenge. I will admit, I have not read the comics but just watched (and enjoyed) the movies. But the characters, colors, ideas are awesome and great fun. And I think my favorite part of the movies was Liz (not to mention all of Hellboy’s cats). I really enjoyed myself here, especially on the drawing phase of this. Maybe I’ll have to see what I can do with Abe Sapien for a future challenge? Keep reading great comics (and maybe I’ll break down one day and grab a Hellboy collection … where to start?).

Lunch Sketch – FELL
Wednesday, March 9th, 2011Decided to trade away my FELL comics last night. It was a tough call and it took some doing, but I finally pulled the trigger. I picked up the tpb last Summer and was fortunate enough to have Ben Templesmith sign it for me at last year’s Heroes Con. So trading the actual comics was something I was prepared to do…even though I LOVE this story! If you haven’t read it yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up.
So while I brooded over the decision today at lunch I decided to do a quick send up of the lead character Detective Richard Fell. I’m not even in the same universe as Templesmith, but I sketched it out anyway! I tried to keep my style (whatever that is) out of the piece and just try to capture the character. So this piece was pretty quick…most of the time was spent in photoshop filling in blacks!
Hope you enjoy it…and go read some FELL!
Sketchercise #3 – the Hellboy Universe
Friday, August 6th, 2010What a great Sketch Charlotte meeting last night! I’ve been coming for over 2 years and I’ve never seen that many people…we had 15 show up! I have to admit I didn’t even know a good 5-6 people at the table. The drawing and conversation was so good I didn’t get a chance to get up and meet everyone. And the table set up didn’t really allow for it anyway.
Onto Sketchercise! #3 is my week and I’ve decided to choose anything and everything from any of the Hellboy and BPRD books! Have at it gang!
Here’s a little something to kick off the topic, a piece I did from last year’s sketchbook…Abe Sapien!

And yes, Tee, I’ll be doing a new sketch for this topic!

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010Playin’ poker with Luke Cage!
Wednesday, June 16th, 2010This is an edited version of the original commission for my buddy Ted. He wanted a Luke Cage piece that showed both versions. He also mentioned liking a playing card drawing I’d done before (Spirit/GL Hal). So I combined the two. The original piece Ted has hanging in his downtown pad has the current Luke Cage on top with the 70′s version on bottom. I thought the 70′s version was a better drawing, so I flipped it, cleaned up the “CAGE” belt buckle and added a playing card-espue background. I’m really happy with how this one turned out!
I’m usually have more of a realistic style, but bending the rules really gave this a playing card feel. The proportions are off, but I think they really serve the overall design. May take a crack at some more playing cards at some point down the line…
The original was done with Copic markers on my usual 9 x 12 bristol board.
