This is an edited version of the original commission for my buddy Ted. He wanted a Luke Cage piece that showed both versions. He also mentioned liking a playing card drawing I’d done before (Spirit/GL Hal). So I combined the two. The original piece Ted has hanging in his downtown pad has the current Luke Cage on top with the 70′s version on bottom. I thought the 70′s version was a better drawing, so I flipped it, cleaned up the “CAGE” belt buckle and added a playing card-espue background. I’m really happy with how this one turned out!
I’m usually have more of a realistic style, but bending the rules really gave this a playing card feel. The proportions are off, but I think they really serve the overall design. May take a crack at some more playing cards at some point down the line…
The original was done with Copic markers on my usual 9 x 12 bristol board.

Bear loves robot.
The perfect weapon: A cat.
The secret history of Abe Sapien.
Hiroshima, ten years later.
And Buffy is back.
Every Wednesday we run down the 5 most interesting comics and graphic novels that come out this week. These are the 5 books I’d be buying myself but I’m still pretty rattled from losing both Kara Thrace and Captain America in one week so I think it’s probably best to stay away from escapist fantasy this week until I’m fully recovered.
The $10 Trade Review
Friday, September 29th, 2006Amazon recently had a 4 for 3 deal on anything priced under $10 (might still be going on) so I took the opportunity to catch up on 3 trades I had been meaning to buy – Loveless, The Exterminators and Fear Agent. Click below to read my thoughts on the purchases (if you’re wondering where the 4th book is, I decided against using the 4th slot for Brian Wood’s DMZ and instead used it on a Hard Case Crime novel which I have not read yet.)
Dusty Star # 1
Tuesday, September 19th, 2006
Written by Andrew Robinson & Joe Pruett
Illustrated & colored by Andrew Robinson
Lettered by Marshall Dillon
Image Comics/Desperado
First off a disclaimer; I loved Andrew Robinson’s Starman covers. I admit a bias when it comes to folks who worked on DC’s Starman title.
Alright Dusty Star is hard to categorize and that’s what I like about the title. Read the first few pages and you think it’s a stylized western. Then you see a motorcycle. What the? I guess if you had to categorize Dusty Star it’s a western, sci-fi, noir, and military comic.
Andrew Robinson’s design sense is well defined. He’s not afraid to experiment and the reader is richly rewarded for the risk. The artist’s color pallet is much wider than most four color books. Dusty Star starts with a muted lavender color that is quite odd but it works. What I really enjoyed was the black and white rain page. The page is so important because the next page resumes color for a while.
The pencils are really wild. Once you think you have a handle on the style then Andrew will switch up the panels and angles. Even the characters will change slightly depending on action and story mode.
The writing is classic western mixed with noir sci-fi. I’m intrigued by the writing and can’t wait to see the story evolve and become a bit meatier.
Overall I would highly recommend Dusty Star if you are looking for an interesting story telling experience.
