Sketchercise #2: Excitement in Riverdale

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Okay, here’s my take on our “Sketchercise” theme of Riverdale. This assignment was my bright idea. About time I actually did it myself. ;) We were to take any 3 characters from the Archie universe and put them together into a single scene. This is my twisted, fun take on this. I also decided to draw these characters in my style (just go for it, outright and full on). I’m extremely proud of how this turned out. I learned a lot doing it, and relearned the power of spot blacks.

I know everyone was snickering when I announced the assignment (after the groans were over with, at least). I just can’t believe no one else went “there” with it. Me? I simply could not resist, especially when drawing such a hottie as Betty. And yes, I’m a “Betty” man (as opposed to Veronica). Instead of making this an “oh sh*t!” situation for our blondie, I decided to put Betty in charge and have her totally into it. So far the “Sketchercise” series has been a great learning tool for me, as I catch up. Now, onto #3. I only have like 7 or 8 more to catch the rest of the group. ;)

Sketchercise: Easy Adventure

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

So, this is my first submission to Sketch Charlotte’s “Sketchercise” event. Y’all are on like, topic 9 or something. So I figured I’d at least submit one. So I went to the first challenge, which was to draw your favorite comic strip character. I spent a LONG time thinking of all the strips I read as a kid and teenager. Hours staring at the boxes in sequence were spent by me, as I was learning to read. There were sooooooooo many great ones. But my “favorite”? Damn, that was hard. Not easy. And then I realized that one strip that blew me away. It had T-O-N-S of adventure, trippy escapades in bizarre lands, colorful characters, and one fella who had no problem at all solving matters with his hands. That strip was “Captain Easy, Soldier of Fortune”.

The strip and characters, Easy and the original lead, Wash Tubbs, just blew my young mind away, even though it was the Bill Crooks & Jim Lawrence Easy I was growing up with. I loved how the characters’ faces were cartoony and real all at the same time, and especially how the clothes had motion to them, even though a modicum of lines were used. So thanks to the Sketchercise challenge, I’ve rediscovered my love for this, my favorite comic strip character. For Christmas I think I’m going to ask for the Fantagraphics volumes reprinting Crane’s unbelievable Sundays. I mean, Easy is so damn cool … he’s old-school, but he’s just truly kickass. He doesn’t get dusty with the years. Every time I look at a strip, I think, “Damn, Easy lives. He’s so cool. Wow, I can’t believe that situation they’re in!” So, thanks, Brandon, for giving me the hard time about not submitting to “Sketchercise”. :) It has reconnected me with my love for the great strips which got me into comics in the first place. Now, we’ll see how much I catch up to the rest of you Sketchercisers.

A Fence Line Chat in Color

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Thank you, Sketch Charlotte. I’m ground down to a mental nub often when I come. I leave re-energized, even in my own quiet way. Finished this at tonight’s fabulous meeting (and started my next sketch, to boot). Thanks, everybody– you’re awesome.

Sketchercise 2 theme

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Allright, gang. I gotta admit I enjoyed the groans I heard from one end of the table last night when I announced this week’s Sketchercise theme. Yes, you heard right. Draw three characters in one setting from the Riverdale gang: Mr. Weatherbee, Betty and Jughead. The rest is up to you. Have fun!!! :)

Direct ink goodness

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Direct-ink sketches from tonight’s Sketch Charlotte meetup. At left, customer with bigass awesome beard. Right, my buddy Henry, making funny faces as he drew, knowing that I was drawing him. Tonight I rediscovered the joys of direct-ink sketching. Forced my mind to tune in as it turned off and let my eyes and pen do the rest. As always, wonderful to see everyone, laugh, and try to figure out what the hell kind of movies or TV shows they were talking about.

Catching a Ride

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

Finished up Thursday night’s sketch. Had total fun doing this, and will use it as a springboard for what I’m doing for the next Comicopia cover. What a meeting Thursday was! Awesome to see the newbies, Joel, Jason, Dan and Bridgit. :)

A Dash of Wonder

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Just remembered I hadn’t posted this one, as I’ve been in prep-mode for Heroes Con 2010, where I’ll be exhibiting. Wonder Woman is great fun to draw.

Empathy for J’onn

Monday, May 17th, 2010

I do so love this character. Not that I know an awful lot about him. I just know that I love him thanks to the Justice League and JL Unlimited cartoons from a few years back. I long to see J’onn in comics in the same manner and grace he was depicted there … but every time I pick up a floppy the art makes me want to scream, with one gigantorous exception, Darwyn Cooke’s “The New Frontier”. My wife feels the same, and trust me, she’s not really into superhero comics, but is she ever into J’onn J’onzz. So to heck with it, I’ll draw my own take on the Martian Manhunter. I think I’ll feature him in an upcoming cover I’ll be doing for Comicopia. I do rarely draw superheroes, but doggone it I had total fun doing this. Look for more!

Nathan Takes a Tea

Earl Grey, naturally. Inspired by George Pratt and Michael Nobbs, I ditched my foul mood and went back to my “dot-dash-ugly” style. Definitely picked me up. I do enjoy drawing stuff from my head as if I’m staring at it in real life. Interestingly, the last time I did location drawing, last Thursday, I was impelled to cartoon. Today, I drew from imagination and did it in a “sketch” style. Anyway, it was fun, and seemed to chase my Tuesday demons away a bit.
