I’m enjoying my experiments with the Alphabeasts project. Here’s the latest, even if it’s super-late (still in the “B” week!).

Just having fun, doing my take on the Batman. I couldn’t resist jumping in on the title theme of late. After all, comics should be fun. :)

Sketchercise: Hellboy

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

I finally got around to participating in the “Sketchercise: Hellboy” challenge. I will admit, I have not read the comics but just watched (and enjoyed) the movies. But the characters, colors, ideas are awesome and great fun. And I think my favorite part of the movies was Liz (not to mention all of Hellboy’s cats). I really enjoyed myself here, especially on the drawing phase of this. Maybe I’ll have to see what I can do with Abe Sapien for a future challenge? Keep reading great comics (and maybe I’ll break down one day and grab a Hellboy collection … where to start?).

Farm cats

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

I finished this sketch up at last week’s Sketch Charlotte meetup, then added a couple shadow tweaks. I was inspired by my farm experience at Yogaville, Va., and after reading The Complete Essex County. So far I’ve been able to succeed in going to every meetup. I hope work doesn’t get in the way of that, but it’s one of my 2011 goals. I’m always glad for getting to hang with such an awesome group of people. ~TD

Sketchercise #2: Excitement in Riverdale

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Okay, here’s my take on our “Sketchercise” theme of Riverdale. This assignment was my bright idea. About time I actually did it myself. ;) We were to take any 3 characters from the Archie universe and put them together into a single scene. This is my twisted, fun take on this. I also decided to draw these characters in my style (just go for it, outright and full on). I’m extremely proud of how this turned out. I learned a lot doing it, and relearned the power of spot blacks.

I know everyone was snickering when I announced the assignment (after the groans were over with, at least). I just can’t believe no one else went “there” with it. Me? I simply could not resist, especially when drawing such a hottie as Betty. And yes, I’m a “Betty” man (as opposed to Veronica). Instead of making this an “oh sh*t!” situation for our blondie, I decided to put Betty in charge and have her totally into it. So far the “Sketchercise” series has been a great learning tool for me, as I catch up. Now, onto #3. I only have like 7 or 8 more to catch the rest of the group. ;)
