Sketch Charlotte is now on Twitter

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Everyone on Twitter should start following @sketchcharlotte. Get tweets whenever new blog postings go up, alerts on upcoming meetings and start conversations about art in Charlotte.

Plus, we do also have a Facebook group so why not join that too if you’re not already a member. Maybe we’ll start using it for stuff. You never know.

Sketch Charlotte Meetup Feb 12

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

We had a good meetup this past Thursday (my first in a while). Good conversation, some (probably day old) coffee and a little bit of sketching. These were some non-Sketch Charlotte patrons sitting behind us at Showmars. Joining Tom, Herc and myself was first time attendee Michael Ashe who brought along some awesome sketches to show and new friend to Sketch Charlotte, comic book pro, Jason Latour who brought back the Con Flu from NYCC and probably infected us all.
Next meeting is Friday February 27th at The Philosopher’s Stone.

Valentine’s Day is coming

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

I recently created a bunch of character illustrations for Design Transmit’s Valentine’s Day E-Cards. You can choose a background, add some characters, type a message and email it to a Valentine or save it to the gallery.

Give it a try!

Hey Kids, do you like comics?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

As some of you know, for the past couple of years I’ve been writing a weekly preview of the top 5 most interesting comic releases over at a site called YesButNoButYes.com. As of last week I’ve started “syndicating” that column on the blog for our local comics shop, Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find. Head on over there and leave a comment if you’d like. It’s a really great blog with some good comics related content so check it out.

Wednesday is New Comics Day at The Heroesonline Blog.

High School Teachers

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

So I have recently been connecting with old high school classmates on Facebook which led to me going through my old high school yearbook in order to help better identify said Facebook friends. Turns out the yearbook is a cornucopia of fantastically dated headshots of all the teachers from good old Massapequa High. While on vacation last week I started going through and drawing them.

My goal in doing this is to work on my cartooning skills and to work on using reference without necessarily drawing directly from it.

Here’s Mr. Burke and Ms. Black, English Teachers. More to come.

Heroes Discussion Group

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

I recently did an interview with Dustin Harbin and Andy Mansell about the monthly Heroes Discussion Group they hold over at Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find. I went to my first group meeting last month and it was fantastic! A lively and really interesting dissection of Batman: Year One. I totally recommend everyone check one of these out.

In the meantime, here’s my discussion with Dustin and Andy about the ins and outs of running a comic book discussion group.

My latest installment of Anatomy of a Panel is up. This time I talk with writer Cullen Bunn and artist Brian Hurtt about a scene in the latest issue of their book, The Damned: Prodigal Sons. It’s all about constructing a good action scene.

Anatomy of a Panel: Scalped

So, I’ve added yet another blog to my repetoire and have started a new monthly column called Anatomy of a Panel where I pick a scene from a comic and interview everyone involved in making that scene happen – the writers, artists, colorists, editors, etc.

My first interview is with the team behind Vertigo’s excellent Scalped.

Hope you all like it.
