HereosCon was such a blast this weekend. Sketch Charlotte had a real nice presence at the show between all of us exhibiting at our various tables, our fun Sketch Charlotte panel on Sunday and having our Anthology floating around the show (I sold about 6 of them). Of course all of that put me almost a day off schedule with my Animal Alphabet entry but here it is.

H is for Honey Badger

This week, my #AnimalAlphabet contribution is inspired by one of my favorite recent internet memes.

F is for Flamingo (the Barrett edition)

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Here is my take on a flamingo for Animal Alphabet. I went for a more straightforward, less cartoony approach then I’ve done with the last two letters. I found flamingos to be pretty satisfying to draw though. Who knew?

F is for Flamingo

D is for Dolphin

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Here is my post for this week’s Animal Alphabet. It’s inspired by that old Saturday Night Live skit with Harry Shearer about the synchronized swimmers who didn’t know how to swim. Someone needs to make a children’s book about a dolphin who’s afraid to swim. Also I just got back from Folly Beach where the dolphins were leaping out of the ocean every five minutes.

B is for Basset Hound

Animal Alphabet continues…

The Animal Alphabet Project

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Cartoonists Ben Towle and Rob Ullman started up The Animal Alphabet Project this week. Every Monday they’re going to post an animal drawing for each letter of the alphabet. All cartoonists and illustrators are welcome to contribute. I’m going to try to keep up with this as a nice little way to draw something a little different for me. Here’s my first entry.

Be nice to see some other Sketch Charlotte folks join in. Here’s the Tumblr site they set up. http://animalalphabet.tumblr.com/

Drawn Together for The Troops!

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Thanks to everyone who helped out with donating some very cool sketches for me to send to our Overseas Troops. Here are jsut a few of them. I have 2 big care packages going out this week, to two different Units stationed in the middle east. I’ll be including all of the great Drawings everyone supplied! Thanks to Brandon Big Dog for helping arrange all of this on such short notice!

New Sketchercize Topic: Hairstyles

Friday, September 17th, 2010

For this week’s Sketchercise, we’re going to steal an idea from animator John K. Draw a convincing women’s hairstyle. Hair is one of the trickier things to draw so this is good practice to take some time to focus on it. You can copy some fashion magazine photos like John K does or take it in whatever direction you’d like. The key is though to not just make something up from scratch. You can embellish, caricaturize or really distort a hairstyle. But try to find some good reference to work from so that you can really study how hair works. The key is to make it convincing.

My First iPad Sketches

Friday, September 17th, 2010

I decided to break out the iPad at Sketch Group tonight and do a little finger sketching using Sketchbook Pro. Here’s a drawing I did of Herc and a random girl drawing in which I try to get the hang of using layers and shading with the various tools that the app offers you.
