Thank you, Sketch Charlotte. I’m ground down to a mental nub often when I come. I leave re-energized, even in my own quiet way. Finished this at tonight’s fabulous meeting (and started my next sketch, to boot). Thanks, everybody– you’re awesome.

A Fence Line Chat in Color
Thursday, September 30th, 2010Drawn Together for The Troops!
Thursday, September 30th, 2010Thanks to everyone who helped out with donating some very cool sketches for me to send to our Overseas Troops. Here are jsut a few of them. I have 2 big care packages going out this week, to two different Units stationed in the middle east. I’ll be including all of the great Drawings everyone supplied! Thanks to Brandon Big Dog for helping arrange all of this on such short notice!
SketcHAIRcise: Joan Holloway
Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010Well, we’re drawing women’s hair this time ’round and I took that direction as an opportunity to draw a gal with tons of piled up hair and tons of piled up everything else as well. Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks) from AMC’s Mad Men has lovely tresses of blazing red hair that she weaves around her head into a high rise serpentine sculpture. While I don’t think I got a really great likeness in the drawing, I do think her character comes through a little here; sexy and tough and ready to take care of business (whether that means trying to save a recently lawnmowered foot or wheel out a newly expired secretary under the nose of clients, she’s ready.)

Saturday, September 18th, 2010New Sketchercize Topic: Hairstyles
Friday, September 17th, 2010For this week’s Sketchercise, we’re going to steal an idea from animator John K. Draw a convincing women’s hairstyle. Hair is one of the trickier things to draw so this is good practice to take some time to focus on it. You can copy some fashion magazine photos like John K does or take it in whatever direction you’d like. The key is though to not just make something up from scratch. You can embellish, caricaturize or really distort a hairstyle. But try to find some good reference to work from so that you can really study how hair works. The key is to make it convincing.

My First iPad Sketches
Friday, September 17th, 2010I decided to break out the iPad at Sketch Group tonight and do a little finger sketching using Sketchbook Pro. Here’s a drawing I did of Herc and a random girl drawing in which I try to get the hang of using layers and shading with the various tools that the app offers you.

Sketchercise: The Baumer
Tuesday, September 7th, 2010
So I tried my hand at my favorite Tenenbaum sibling, Richie, and I attempted to portray him in the style of Dan Clowes. (Well, one of the many Clowes styles.) In my head, this was a much more successful pairing than what I discovered I was actually capable of dishing out with my real life drawing hand. Oh well, you draw and you learn, right?
Anyhow, I really like The Baumer and I love that people are always asking him “What happened out there?” Next time you see me, you can ask me the same question concerning this drawing.
Sketchercise: Films of Wes Anderson
Thursday, September 2nd, 2010(Bad Route by Jason Kottke, featured in the film The Royal Tenenbaums.)
Do you sit at home, alone, night after night just toiling away on portraits of Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman that the world may never see? Well, then today is your lucky Sketchercise! The theme for this round is The Films of Wes Anderson. Participants should put on their very best crested blazers, wetsuits or red Adidas jogging suits and set about drawing their favorite characters or scenes from any existing Wes Anderson movie. Although, actually if you drew an image from a non-existent Wes Anderson movie, that might be damned impressive. Below is a helpful list of from which to draw inspiration from:
Bottle Rocket
Rushmore
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
The Darjeeling Limited (including Hotel Chevalier)
The Fantastic Mr. Fox
That’s it! Good luck out there my Lawn Wranglers!
