Strollin’ Sally

Wow, what a meeting tonight. Time flew, and the next thing you know it was the second Thursday of the month (I count April Fool’s Day as an actual day, regardless of its celebration). Anyway, the most amazing crew came by, and while they were here I drew what I think is one of my bestest sketches ever-sers. Out of the blue, just coming through town, and thanks to this fabulous website where meeting dates and times are published, Frank Miller and his old buddy Klaus Janson dropped by. Janson did nothing but bash John Romita Jr., and when I said that his work was awesome on JR Jr’s, he almost punched me, but Frank quieted him down. We all were sketching away when next thing you know, in walks Robert Crumb to our humble little SketchCharlotte HQ at Showmar’s on 7th. He said that having a sketch group is one of the coolest things ever, plopped down and demanded to review ALL of our sketchbooks. I told him that a lot of my stuff was up on my website, www.watchtomdraw.com, but handed him this year’s current Moleskine where I keep my sketches and various task lists. Miller actually looked worried, and when he asked Robert for an autograph the tension was so thick you could cut it. I managed to help everyone settle down … at least until Dan Clowes walked in. DANG, was this a great meeting or WHAT?! So when I pointed out to Clowes that he looks as schlubby cool as his characters, he actually blushed. Then said something completely smarmy and sarcastic, but said it so fast that it didn’t register with me that it was a horrible put-down until Janson just out of the blue socked the ever living sh!t outta him. It was amazing. And then Clowes apologized to me. Actually apologized. We all drew in each other’s sketchbooks, and WOW, was I ever blown away. I’ll never ever EVER miss a SketchCharlotte meeting again, especially knowing that comic greats, be they known or unknown, can just stroll in and join the sketching fun. Amazing.

I said I was sorry no one told you there was no meeting tonight.

haha Dang, it looks like I missed a great meeting. Damn! Henry and I were just talking about trying to start meeting twice a month and here I go missing the meeting. At least it was because I was working on comics. Sorry, man.

HAHAHA. Relax, Rich. It’s all good. I look forward to the next one … but I’ll wait until everyone confirms via email, which apparently is what we do now. And Herc, there’s no better reason to no meet than to work on comics, I know. It was nice to feel the Showmar’s love.

I’m sorry I didn’t call you back last night Tom, time hasn’t been my own lately, but things are looking up so hopefully I’ll be able to make next week’s meeting. In the meantime, I may even start drawing again! :)

Hey, that’s allright, Big Dog. I missed a couple meetings myself. Rich’s continual progress on his awesome Nathan Sorry comic has been inspiring. Herc’s new comic work is also very inspiring. And our new member Henry and his getting his comics into the local store AND attending a con is very inspiring. I feel we need to recommit to all of that goodness and translate it into SketchCharlotte as well. And Tess way up North drawing away and sending us her good energy also is inspiring. I really had a good time at Showmar’s last night. It’s amazing how much you miss such a humble little place like that. So I’ll be there every Thursday at 6:30 from here on out sketching away. I figure that way I won’t miss a SC meetup. :D

Yeah we really need to regroup and figure out a better plan for organizing meetings. I had to back off taking the lead on organizing these because between kids and freelance work I was missing too many meetings myself. So I passed that honor onto Big Dog who is now feeling the time crunch that parenthood imposes on you. The reason I think we need to not just assume there’s a meeting every 2nd Thursday is that I hate driving half an hour up to Showmar’s to find out no one is coming. Sending out an email to everyone the week before to start generating a headcount is helpful. We could probably do the same thing with this site somehow but I feel like email is a better way to assure people are out there.

    What do you guys think?

  • http://www.circlecitytales.com Tom

Tweet-face it out, too, for anyone who might wanna drop in. Just update the website when a plan actually is in place, my 2¢.

It’s never been too much of a problem, normally. Different people have always shown up. I can start sending out an email. I really just forgot this time. We can totally regroup. :-) After this month I think Henry and I are going to try to start meeting twice a month. Those who can make it would be awesome. With the library changes it doesn’t look like I’ll be teaching for now. So I’d rather spend the time with you guys. :-)

Tom: thanks for the encouraging words about my comic. Four pages in and I’m feeling the deadline crunch. ugh! That and the rustiness. Still pushing through though. Hope all is well with everyone.
    peace

    Cool bananas, Herc!

  • http://www.richbarrett.com Rich

How about for one of the two monthly meetings we go to one of the local figure drawing groups?

  • http://illtiki.livejournal.com Eraklis

Ricj: that’s totally cool with me. I can sure use it!

  • http://ohthehumanatee.com/ Henry Eudy

Man, I just assumed that since I didn’t hear anything last Thursday that the meeting was maybe this Thursday the 15th (being the 2nd full week of April). I definitely would have shown up if I only knew even one other person would have been there. Oh well. Yeah, please either release a Tweet or send me an email or write a sentence up here when a meeting is go. If I have the word, I will pretty much for sure show up.

So, uh, the sketch? Anyone? I was really proud of this one. Ahh, well. That’ll pay me to put up a humorous post (whose humor apparently was lost on pretty much everyone, ugh), along with a drawing I’m really jammed about! ;)

  • http://ohthehumanatee.com Henry

Oh man, sorry, Tom. I really super dig the bright yellow and the cheerfulness of this one. Great fluidity throughout the figure and especially in the tilt of her upraised foot. Just the positioning of that foot communicates so much about the entire drawing. Also, really great variance in the line thickness, imbues the drawing with personality and appeal. Nice!

  • http://illtiki.livejournal.com Eraklis

I found the post a riot. The drawing on the other hand…kidding. I love the playfulness of the drawing. You really feel her mood.

  • http://www.watchtomdraw.com Tom

    ROFL!!!

  • http://www.richbarrett.com Rich

The drawing is sweet. Love how you’ve been adding little tastes of color to your sketches lately.

For the record my very first comment on this thread was completely in jest.
