American Heroic

by Terence

Commission for a buddy on a podcast message board. He wanted the Vision and Scarlet Witch posed in the manner of the classic painting, American Gothic. Pitchfork and all. Felt like I did it justice, though Scarlet Witch is kinda squoze too tightly behind him. And yes, I just made up the word “squoze”.

    I dig it, brother.

What a neat concept! See some really good things throughout the drawing, but what jumps out to me most is some inconsistency in your inks. In places it looks more like gimmick than substance (if that makes sense). The direction and line variation of your hatching doesn’t match. Not saying it should always match, but you want to have a general style.

Yeah I definitely see your point, Brandon. The inking is definitely kind of random. The style I want to go for is a lot crisper than this, but a few errant brush strokes can change the whole game. Also, I’ve never done any torso-up art this big, so I definitely had trouble working with hatching and feathering. All in all, I see some good things, and some things I need to work on. Thanks for the input!

Very neat idea. Terrence, the path to inking crisp and smooth is to simply do it, RELAX, and use quality products. The more you do, the better it’ll be. I think the Scarlet Witch’s hair is on its way to being very, very nice. I like that you played around with reversing out some strands as well. T, try feathering using a brush and small lines more closely together, versus a thin pen line feather coming off in a different direction from a smooth brushed outline. See where that gets you. Keep up the great work … it’s awesome to see you really experimenting and exploring, not being afraid to pick up a nib and brush and go for it. :)
