Nathan Sorry Splash Page – Final Image

by Rich

A while back I posted the sketch below so I thought people might be interested in seeing where it went from here.

I inked over this sketch and scanned it in, doing a heavy amount of Photoshop retouching not just to the line integrity but to the actual structure of the face which I wasn’t happy with once I saw it on screen.

I then added some tones and dropped it into a page layout I’ve been working on. I always knew I was only going to use half the face but I inked the whole thing since I wasn’t sure if I’d change my mind. Below is the final image and the final design for a new splash page that is now live on NathanSorry.com

groovy, Rich. The areas where you went chunky, crisp & clean on the edges of the shadows really are effective, graphic and cool. You really deadened out the expression on him in the final, which adds to that zombie-like je ne sais quoi that your protagonist has. As a sketch I like the expression on the original, but the finished version has a wonderful haunted quality to it. You should edge your shadows more often with straight, crisp edges like you did on the final, which is truly juicy (or as Terrence would say, “sick, man!”). :)

Thanks, Tom! One of the many challenges I’ve come across in doing this book is getting expressions down right because this is the type of story that relies on that sort of thing. I was way off with my initial sketch and didn’t realize it until I dropped the sketch into the homepage layout I was working on. I needed to see it in context to realize it wasn’t quite right.

I like it for all the reasons Tom already mentioned. I like were you took the sketch and the changes you made.
