I finally finished this sketch I'd started this spring. Every now and then I’d go down and sit down on the bench at our condo community backyard garden, ink well and pen nib in hand, and enjoy some ink time. I forgot about this lad with a butterfly face until a while ago, then finally finished it up. It’s got its rough edges, especially the swirls in the sky, which failed me as I attempted to ink them in in this odd-sized sketchbook. Don’t be afraid to dream (or post), even if it’s rough. Just work it. I hated the background sky, so I whited it out and went back in. First I consulted a bit of George Herriman, who steered my in the right direction. What a master he was.

Hey Brother,
I love the trippiness of this drawing. The different linewieghts really accentuate the whole feel of the drawing. MORE!!!!

Cool, man, thanks. I tried out several different pen nibs, starting with a Hunt 056 School Nib, then moving to a Hunt 108 for much of it. I followed in with a brush, then added some more of the 108, a pen nib I've fallen in love with. I picked it up as a substitute for the Hunt 102, which is as brush-like a pen nib as you'll ever find, but have gotten used to the slightly stiffer response of the 108 (but not too stiff). After this exercise I'm now using a combo pen nib + brush on everything, because if you all-brush your art it looks "slick" and if you all-nib it it can look stiff.
