Lovin' the inks bro!
I love sketching that isn't all academic. That makes even inorganic things like DVD racks have a little energy.

Coolness, Herc. Thanks, man. Today I'm going to an uptown YMCA with Yvonne (to the Y with Y -- funny, no?) then to the Gay Pride parade to be with my friends at Gateway Village. I'll be taking my sketchbook, paint travel set and some ink pens and see what I get!

WHOA, you guys 'n gal are totally awesome. What a great idea. Guerilla drawing. I'm in! And that's how I feel about sketching anyway. It's supposed to be incognito, everyday, random, whimsical, energetic, lazy, slow, fun ... art!

The Boston T was great for this, too. When riding the subway in NYC I always felt a little intimidated to sketch other passengers, like they might be giving me the eye, but maybe that was just because I was a visitor.

That's the only reason I miss the NYC subways. You could sit there on the train surrounded by unwitting drawing subjects sitting right in front of you. That's the only reason to miss it though.

Count me in! Drawing is the best cure that I know of for boredom... plus you get to capture the beauty and absurdity of everyday life, as Tom as done here with his "ideo" stand.

Another idea I've had for a while: guerilla drawing. As in, we all go to a big, crowded public event (Speed Street, Taste of Charlotte, the uptown bar scene on a Saturday night) and just try to sketch as many people as possible incognito, then regroup after an hour or two. I suppose it could get ya punched in the nose, but it could also be pretty entertaining.

Hmm, it might be funny to do an on-going draw-off where we have to find unusual and maybe even inconvenient places to pull out your sketchbook and draw a really quick sketch. Kind of like Tess drawing in the dark at a concert and not sure what she's going to get or Tom here drawing a DVD rack, something most people would never think to sit down and draw. The quicker and more inconvenient the better: check out line at the grocery, stopped at a red light, while you're pumping gas. Could lead to some really shitty drawings or some really impromptu masterpieces.
